While other parts of the United States are blanketed in snow, the climate in Rogers, Arkansas, is usually mild. From December to March, the average highs are often in the upper 40s to low 60s degrees. That makes winter a great time for locals and visitors to throw on some layers and experience activities that are less accessible in colder climates such as hiking, biking and bird-watching. Add the following top winter trails and activities in Rogers and beyond to your agenda.

Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area
20201 AR-12, Rogers, AR 72756

Several trails are accessible year-round at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area, which encompasses more than 12,000 acres of wild Ozark landscape. The 54-mile trail system is open to hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding amid frosted foliage, quiet woodlands and wandering wildlife—great sights to catch with your camera if you’re a photography buff. To encounter a mixture of terrains and breathtaking views of Beaver Lake, hop on the Dutton and Dry Creek Loop portions of the 8.5-mile Pigeon Roost Trail, a route with sections ranging from moderate to challenging.  Other routes to check out include Ozark Plateau, Historic Van Winkle, Sinking Stream, and Shaddox Hollow. (Note: Some trails are being cleared of debris; check Hobbs’ website for availability.)

Must-Do: Bring your binoculars to see bald eagles soar across the sky or perch on the park’s trees. Hobbs State Park is also a prime place to spy on migrating ducks, grebes, gulls and song birds.

Lake Atalanta Park
500 E. Walnut Street, Rogers, AR 72757

If you’re a casual hiker or little explorers in your crew, make your way to Lake Atalanta Park, located just east of downtown Rogers on Walnut Street. The park has 10 miles of trails and lots of features for families. Let the kiddos loose on the expansive playground, stroll along the popular 2-mile boardwalk that circles the lake (check out the signage along the way for information on the area’s ecosystems and the animals that call them home) or drop a line at one of the six fishing piers (a permit is required). It’s also a haven for bird-watching, with tons of opportunities to spot winter waterfowl.

Must-Do: Jump on The Railyard Loop, which runs all the way to Railyard Bike Park, a hard surface jump bike park a few blocks away from downtown Rogers.

Connecting the communities of Fayetteville, Johnson, Springdale, Lowell, Rogers, Bentonville and Bella Vista, The Razorback Regional Greenway is a year-round recreational trail for walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters, wheelchair users and any individuals looking to take in Northwest Arkansas’ scenic beauty.  Spend the day venturing along the greenway on two wheels (bike rentals are available at HighRoller Cyclery) and cruise to the Pinnacle Hills area to fuel up with breakfast or lunch before you pedal to Mercy Trailhead. There, you’ll find restrooms, a water station and air pumps. If you’re up for a longer ride, continue on to The Greens at Blossom Way Golf Course—an excellent pit stop for taking in beautiful views before you ride south to Fayetteville.

Must-Do: Watch the sunrise on the Razorback Regional Greenway at Pinnacle Hills. Or catch the sunset along the Clear Creek Trail, a component of the greenway near Fayetteville.

War Eagle Trail
21494 Cavern Dr, Rogers, AR 72756

War Eagle Trail is located in Withrow Springs State Park in Huntsville, about 35 miles southeast of downtown Rogers. Since the route is a popular destination for adventurers and view seekers, it’s best visited in the cooler months for a peaceful hike. The 2-mile route is named for the river that runs along its length and leads to a scenic overlook tucked above a 150-foot bluff, which offers spectacular views of the river and Ozark hardwood forest.

Must-Do: On your way to Withrow Springs State Park, enjoy a detour for lunch at the War Eagle Mill & Bridge situated off Highway 12 (about 15 miles east of Rogers). Capture photos of Arkansas’ only working grist mill, and don’t miss the cobbler and house-made corn bread at War Eagle Mill Cafe.
